Graduate 79 diploma nurse. Passed boards first try. Always Be Yourself Unless You Can Be Rafa Then Always Be Rafa Shirt. Worked full time and attended school full time for BSN and MS. Was it worth it? No. Did it give me a salary advantage? No. I personally like school but would have been better off doing something fun. I achieved a lot in my career but think it could all have been done on the shoulders of the diploma. My higher learning came from the doctors and nurses. Joanne Pearson I am also a diploma school graduate-1981 from a hospital based program in an underserved area.

Like you, I was very prepared for my first Med-Surg nursing job for 14K/year. Fast Forward. Experience is essential, but I know nurses who have never read a nursing journal, or gone to a conference since they received their diploma. Lifelong education is essential. Be kind to those new BSN graduates. They will learn skills from you that they don’t possess, and believe it or not they will teach you, too. They will gain experience and they will be our caregivers, so invest in them.

I’m an ADN nurse and took the exact BNS that a BSN nurse takes. I have no desire to go back to school. I love my job, I love being a wife, and I love being a mom. I have absolutely no reason to want to go into debt for a minimum of $15-20,000 for a piece of paper and an extra title behind my name. As a BSN nurse I completely agree with you. I think the whole push towards BSN is garbage and just something for hospitals to brag about. BSN vs. ADN has no bearing on an individuals clinical practice or skills.

I just paid over 10,000 to complete my BSN. Glad I did it, but didn’t get a raise or anything over than personal satisfaction. No more school for me. I loved the BSN program I was in and I did learn , and it did open some doors for me but it’s just more crap to write behind my name and the debt continues. Same for me. Actually took a pay cut moving from one city to another in the same state after obtaining my BSN. Hi Jami Eden Bennett! From another Jami with no E. Lol I always have to say hi whenever I see one of us.

I’m retired now, but I totally agree with you. I was even told in nursing school, ADNs are not management material. Well I have news for that nursing instructor, most of my career I was a working manager and always had respect from the physicians and other nurses I worked with and my evaluations were always great. And yes, we all took the same nursing board exams and passed! My specialty areas were surgery, Pacu, CSR, day surgery unit, emergency department.

I graduated from a hospital school in 1980 with a diploma. My 3 years of practical experience prepared me for bedside nursing, which was the reason for my career choice. I worked in a NICU for almost 10 years, often as charge nurse for the shift. Always Be Yourself Unless You Can Be Rafa Then Always Be Rafa Shirt. I have since worked in homecare and hope that I am not required to obtain a BSN before I retire. Totally Agree!! That’s a lot of money for no return. As I said earlier, I’m spending that money to get my kids through college now.
