I have a read of an Aussie explorer who wandered into West Papua(Indonesia) 30 years ago , only to be found ‘safe ‘with all his equipment robbed and one of his fingers taken away by them as a souvenir. Having hiked through that area in 1976, it is pretty untamed – and the villagers, while still living a hunter and gatherer lifestyle, are wild, at first, but really kind and gentle once they understand you are not a threat.
