Sign Language would be more useful than just one random language u may never need . I had to learn french in high school, 40 years later i have never used it, just a waste of time, teach basic Its Too Cold To Go Outside Wear This Shirt instead, something everyone will benefit from and use. If you do this, make sure it’s a useful language! I learned Italian for 3 years, none of it stuck. I changed to another school which offered German and I can still remember most of it today.

But I would have loved to learn Mandarin, and it’s definitely still on the cards… If China is to be our biggest trading partner, the least we could do is teach their language to our kids so that they might forge closer business ties than our lazy selves have so far… Haven’t most schools already been doing this as I can remember them starting this when I was in year 3. We learnt Italian then I went to high school and had to learn Indonesian.

It’s a good idea but it has its problems like a lot of children are struggling with literacy as it is and putting this burden on them is possibly going to set them further back, not all schools will learn the same language so if you move schools then they have to start again. I learnt both French & Chinese in school and have not used either. Still after 18 years of being out of school I still haven’t used them. I don’t think it should be pushed on anyone.

I would prefer my son learn about aboriginals and there language since he goes to school with a lot of them and lives in an area that has plenty of them. We started Learning Indonesian in year 3 when I was a kid.. My Son who is in year one has been learning Italian and Japanese at his school!! I agree though that we should be learning our own countries Languages that are on the verge of dying out because they are not commonly used or taught!! As an American, I appreciate the fact that I had to learn a second language to be able to graduate.

I chose to learn French in high school, and knowing that helped me to read some of my favorite literature in its original language. Anyone who is closed minded on their kids learning a second language whether its sign language, or any other spoken language needs to get their heads on straight and realize that the wold is no longer a monolingual place. How about making sure they know English first. Learning a second language is a good idea. Most other countries teach their children a second language from much earlier so why is there this arrogance that we don’t need to? How about sign language?

That could be very useful and benefit society a great deal. Of course a second language is handy thing to have in your pocket. I started learning in year 5- italian. Which I learned until year 7 when I had a year off. Then It was indonesian for a year, followed by some more italian, a year of japanese and the net result- I cant speak another language. Then again I have never been very good for learning languages. I don’t get these people with the angry emoji. Maybe these people only think about Arab language or Its Too Cold To Go Outside Wear This Shirt or any language that they don’t like base on the ethnics. I learned Italian at school and some French.
