Her last words on this earth were “i love you”. She was not even suppose to be able to speak. She looked me in the eye raised her hand spoke. I needed to here her tell me that. It meant Dr Seuss I Will Drink Coffee Here Or There Coffee Everywhere Shirt did my best and she knew it! My father had suffered from early on-set dementia and i can say it slowly robbed us of who he was. It was so devastating to see him become the frail shell of the person he once was.

Thankfully he could still recognize myself and my brother yet couldn’t remember that my mother/his wife had passed. We gave up having to have him relive the sadness over and over again. He passed away three years ago this september at the age of 70.

In my opinion taking care of my father was one of the most difficult and humbling experiences i’ve ever had. Thank you for sharing your journey with us. My dad was a lieutenant in usaf. He then owned a tool shop for 50 yrs. He was an expert at his trade . So very very smart. I worked with him everyday…all day.

He taught me everything he knows/knew. We had to stand for long hours doing very tedious work. He would tell me so so often “you have to know this” “listen and learn”. So i did. I was with him for the last years his brain still worked. When he was so smart. The dementia started slow.

Now he does not remember any tool shop. Or any of his brilliant things he made. I am thankful i was able to be with him to know all i know to keep his work going. I tell him don’t worry dad…i remember everything for you. I know why it was so important for me to know it now.

My dad is 88. Now we sit for hours on a porch swing together. My great grandfather had it. It is hard to see anyone go through it. I grew up with him knowing me by name and then that was gone. There were times when i would hate him because i just didn’t understand why he forgot my Dr Seuss I Will Drink Coffee Here Or There Coffee Everywhere Shirt.
