They gotta know how to quickly regain control of a hose. That’s what I was trained to do. You just never know if a Hose is going to break. And with so much going on in a fire. In my day the pumper did at least 4 lines possibly going 4 different ways. And if you don’t succor that broken hose quick it can hurt a lot of people. Candy Dyer, well ill be your pretty close. You lay down on that hose and crawl back to the nozzle. Sometimes the pressure takes two men to hold it. There is not always someone around to shut the valve.

You got to put one foot on a part of the hose that aint moving that much then pull it and make whats called a “z” kink. it will kill the water pressure enough to grab the end and cut the handle off. Well, that’s what the instructor did. But it still got away from him. It’s obvious that this a new recruit at training. He’ll learn. But it is funny to watch. Laying down on the line and creeping toward the nozzle is what we were told. Kneeling over it gives the hose a chance to go right through your legs or knocking you on your ass.

Safest thing to do (even in an emergency ) is to shut down the hose, regain control, and proceed with the attack. But that’s just me. I’m sure you’d rather it happen during a house fire where lives are at risk ? And suddenly a hose slips out and now you have multiple fireman & bystanders getting blasted by that high pressure hose ?
