The religious idea of original sin lives on through the Lacanian desire-as-lack, and as Jung said in the 50s, the atheist trades god for science or rationality, and invests to those ideas with the same gusto. Just like Freud knew that fathers never die (much less mothers I feel inclined to add!) but live on unconsciously, God Is Dead, Morty Merry Ugly Christmas Sweater, so Nietzsche knew that ‘God is dead and we have killed him’ still leaves behind the task of the murdering of His shadow. Nonsense. If you are not brought up to believe in God, it won’t even feature in your psyche other than as an oddity believed in (incomprehensibly) by other people. That isn’t to say that the figure of the father might not be significant, but God? Gimme a break!

You are ignorant to the fact of the past twothousand years of Western history. To the collective unconscious of the Western world God ‘sure as hell’ figures in psychologically relevant ways. Nietzsche is referring the trend of science replacing religion in Europe during the 17th & 18th centuries. And, even as a staunch secular individual, he isn’t proud of his claim. He’s worried about ethics derived from religion being replaced by nihilism. That in order for man to “transcend” his own moral and physical limitations, we must destroy all beliefs in a powerful being above us. Therefore we can become the “overman.”

The “God is Dead” is a metaphor about the so called Metaphysical trend of clinging to a Supra-Cosmological of oneness going back to the Pre-Socratic Philosophers. Such as a single deity or a principle of unification that governs a system of Philosophy or Science. Yet, all of this was created by someone’s intellect, which Nietzsche says only ends up creating values subjectively and projects them on objects into the external world. Nihilism is a counter action to this by returning those values back to the intellect and the external world becomes empty after that. I recommend that people read “The Structure of Scientific Revolutions” by Thomas S. Kuhn which serves as a backdoor into Nietzsche’s Philosophy too.

That’s exactly what it means, too bad most people lack the philosophy knowledge to understand what you even said here. What he really meant can only be figured out by himself, but i think the most possible option, in my opinion, is, that he meant, that there is no god anymore like it was centuries before. An invisible Person, that is giving faith and strength throughout the People. In Nietzsches times there are only the remains of a god-belief. No God, but powerful men, that claimed to be the ambassadors of god. And thats the people that killed “god“. Men, that consider to act in gods will.

My own understanding is very close to this. Then I wonder what man has achieved in coming so far in understanding God. Theological Gods maybe dead but man is still not free of his idea. When that state is achieved, would God be dead for man? …and then would there be hope for better understanding of the chaotic nature of our thoughts? sigggh. Nietzsche is referencing Hegel, who originally wrote the phrase “God is dead.” And he (Hegel) meant it to convey that the validity of reasoned arguments could no longer be grounded in God/religion.

Basically we have entered into an irreversible time in humanity, where we have realized that not only is the ship we have been riding on for thousands of years is sinking, but ALL SHIPS ARE SINKABLE. Nietzsche didnt mean BELIEF – he was too keen a psychologist to simply deny belief. God Is Dead, Morty Merry Christmas Sweat Shirter. Atheism is simply denying belief – Nietzsche said if atheism that the removal of God was only out of the same psychological patterns of nihilism as Chrisianity. That Atheism was just another logical step of Christianity via its value of resentment. The Atheist kills God out if its own christian resentment.
