I just retired this year and I agree with you Elizabeth Pietzsch. The next 10-20 years are going to be hard for nursing because as we baby boomers retire, there just are not enough people going into nursing and with this economy, many can’t afford to get higher degrees. Nursing as a profession better figure something out about how to deal with this. We had the best years…I kinda feel sorry for the new nurses today….it’s going to get very hard for them. Emily Hall yes it is..just because you have a degree doesn’t make you smarter..some of the smartest nurses I knew Happy Halloween Emoji Pumpkin Shirt a diploma school and had a great education….my Mom was one of these people.

Me too!! Glad I retired before this change. I don’t under stand why RN’s with many years of hospital experience weren’t grandfathered in! My sister-in-law had to take courses to get BSN. She had so much going on in her personal life, one in which becoming a widow with kids dealing with the accidental death of their father! She also had to work full time and was a nurse with 15 years Medsurg/oncology experience! Patty Lamb Cohen 42 yrs working as a diploma nurse. It’s changed so much and not for the better. looking forward to retiring in a few years.
And you were probably better educated. I worked with many BSNs who were great at book info but couldn’t figure out what to do when real life looked them in the eye. I am a diploma RN… while in clinicals during my junior yr, I was alongside girls who were getting ready to graduate who had never passed a med, started an IV, given a shot, or put in a foley. I had done all those things in my first semester of school. My program had a higher percentage of NCLEX passes, then some universities. I have no desire to spend another year or more and thousands of dollars to get my degree. I’m working to get my children through college now.

Same here and the BSN schools had a lower rate of passing boards than the ADN school I attended. I bet most of us have worked with advanced degree nurses who were book smart but had absolutely no common sense. I did go back to school and complete a Bachelors of Science in Engineering. If they require a BSN, I will just leave healthcare. Sure not going to help the nursing shortage. I am praying they don’t do this.
They will be hurting themselves.
Jody Niles it’s just a requirement to obtain in a certain time frame or you no longer can work there! Actually we didn’t, we took a grueling 2 day set of boards, not 75 questions and done even the full test is only 275 questions, not sure how this measly sampling qualifies anyone. I worked with an AA degree for 38.5 yrs and then went to school for my BSN.$20,000 later, I had shared experiences with nurses who will probably never see what I had seen in 40 yrs. The one thing that I can say that I got out of going for my BSN was straight A’s for the first time in my life and being inducted into the honor society!

Also, as to the state boards at the time. I spent 2 days in Long Beach, Ca sweating through individual tests and then had to wait for two and a half months for the results.
