Susan Johnson Dust luckily, they have changed. But, buyer beware. Character Horror Collage Funny Overlook High Shirt programs don’t all award the actual bsn! Crazy, right? I have a BS and just started an RN to BSN program that only requires me to take the higher level nursing classes and a nutrition class (since I haven’t previously taken one. CJ Santos …I agree with you. The MS program that I wanted to attend at the time required a BSN. My BS in Social Work was not acceptable to them. So I had no choice but to do the BSN. So that’s what I did. Many years ago. Things have changed I’m sure.

Although I have no intention of EVER using my nursing license ever again (for about 15,764 reasons), it would have been great to have my non-nursing bachelaueate degree (psychology) mean something. Lucky I am out of the clinical setting, with no plans if returning, however still utilizing my RN in a lucrative setting. MattBowman…i havent worked in the clinical setting in eons…and don’t plan on returning. It’s scary. I am so pleased I went the route I did, made me marketable.
40 years as a RN diploma nurse. Amazing experiences and education in a Diploma program and still working at a job I love with the government. Grandfathering nurses is the ONLY sane solution. I am a 33 year diploma nurse. I had the greatest education with my diploma program wouldn’t trade it for the world! However, I did complete my BSN last year and guess what. I did learn some new things that helped me see the broader scope of nursing practice. I am now in my MSN program just because I want to and I’m learning there too. Never knock further education. It’s great for anyone.

Peggy Penovich It should be clear to you that no one is knocking further education. We’re denouncing paternalism within our profession. Look it up. Thanks. Here are additional thoughts. I started out in a BSN program at VU. Transferred to a Diploma program after repeating chemistry in summer school. I got a B on the summer class. Sounds good? Not really, as I had to get an A as they combined both grades, which only brought me to a C. Was not told that, and was flabbergasted that going from a D to a B was not good enough. Graduated from my Diploma program and immediately took a job and my boards.
Went to ER op and then nicu iii with transport team, Nsg sup of a Level nicu iii. Married/children/worked local hospital in OB/GYN/Nsy. Spent almost 10 years working in pharmacovigilance and was a Sr. Drug Safety Assoc. On to psych, cause I missed pt care. At no time did I have the money or time for another degree. And I always worked-usually 2 jobs. I love nursing, and it loved me right back. A degree would not have increased my pay scale as it was commensurate with my experience. I attend seminars and probably cannot retire unless I hit the lottery.
No pension. I repeat, I love my job, but would have loved great benefits and a pension. I really believe nursing is a calling. And if it’s not, don’t bother. I am a diploma RN and we got the best training ever. I see these nursing students from colleges doing their clinical on my unit and can’t believe that they don’t know the basics. Give me a diploma grad any day. A degree is only a piece of paper means nothing. 37 year diploma grad here! Wouldn’t trade my training through a hospital program for all the money in the world!! I passed the same boards as the AD and BS programs. Ok…so I didn’t take Freshman English, etc. but my hands on education can match Character Horror Collage Funny Overlook High Shirt any day!
