I’m pretty ignorant on the subject of painting ones face a different color. During a studio makeup class, i drew up a design for a character with darker skin as that was the skin color that would look amazing with the crazy cool makeup. I was intending on painting my face a darker color so i could do the designs intended for our critique. When discussing if with my studio professor it shocked her and she was taken aback.

I didn’t go through with the design, i modified it for my skin tone but it never was fully explained as to why it has a negative connotation, and i am genuinely curious, i want to be culturally/ racially aware and not offended others. Is it because of blackface? Or is it just inappropriate?

No, it’s not complicated at all. Let kids dress as any character or figure they want. Do not point out race / cultural restrictions to them and the whole world will be a better place!
