Two of the most influential people in my career (therefore my life) have been two incredibly strong women. Frequently I think back on how lucky I was to have such dedicated and caring teachers as Jill Maihoney. In AZ, which has a deteriorating public education system, this really shouldn’t have happened.Jill is the kind of teacher that would be at school at 6:30 (2 hours before school started) and leave at 5 (almost three hours after school was released). She is the kind of teacher that used to let me spend recess inthe band room so Im Just A Teacher Standing In Front Of A Classroom Shirt that she outfitted. Jill has this way of inspiring kids to be the best versions ofthemselves it’s no wonder that her elementary school band program produced so many wonderful professional musicians.

Barb was the ideal educator to pick up right where Jill left off. She is the kind of person that calls you on your shit! She has the skill set and drive to do WHATEVER she wants as a musician but she opted to teach a bunchof kids how to play jazz. Im Just A Teacher Standing In Front Of A Classroom Shirt to be a percussionist inone of the high school ensembles when I was in 8th grade that fundamentally changed my life. In some ways, I am still chasing the high I got from playing my first Young Sounds guest artist concert with Rebeca Mauleon. I will never forget that gig because it was that day I knew I was going to be a musician.Reading the piece I am attaching infuriates me.We have to do better. As soon as Ryan sees the water he starts running, determined to make it to where the ocean and sky meet. I stayed in pace with him (for the most part.) he gets knocked down by a wave and comes back up with a maniacal smile. He loves this. I get knocked down too. Thank God he wears swim shirts because I never let go of his. I see JT at the shore making a move to come in and help us, I yell at him to “Stay where you are!” I don’t know what I would’ve done had he gotten into trouble too. Thankfully there was a couple a little further out; I saw them bracing themselves to “save” us. Luckily it didn’t come to that – after a few more tumbles I coaxed him out and to the bay side. My mom’s chairs never hit the ground. And also my clothes never left my body. It all happened so fast, I never got the chance to remove mine before hitting the water. Cargo shorts are heavy as hell when they’re wet and have half the sand from Tobay beach in them.
