But in an effort to look free range, some mix marigold seeds in with the feed, specifically because it gives eggs a darker yolk. There’s farmers who grow fields of Marigolds for this purpose exclusively. Example….Lompoc, ca. We buy small farm eggs from friends. Mostly from their yard chickens. Yolk color as well as shell color is based upon the chicken, it’s age and feed. We get a ton of variety from the small farm than store eggs.

Much better taste from the small farm eggs. We eat farm eggs all the time. Some may not agree with us but we feel they taste so much better from a local farmer instead of from the grocery store. Eggs are good for you regardless, only better when they are free range! Very true Suzanne. It is the green grass that makes for dark yolks. No free range eggs here when we have four feet of snow !!!! Same holds true for butter.. Butter made ahem ahem ahem cows are out on pasture will be much darker yellow than when they eating hay and grain during winter.

So that’s why the eggland’s best tasted different and looked s little darker. I want chickens out of factory farm conditions, but to be honest, those darker ones were too strongly for my taste.  In Romania the yellow one is so rare, we throw it when we see it. Unless it’s dark orange or close, it goes to trash!! But it’s good to share this info for people that only see eggs from supermarket  I guessed before reading the article. Very good to know and now I belive we’ll be trying to eat free range… where i live it’s so easy to find so it’s horrible that I am actually eating the store bought!

All i know is i raised about 6 chickens with my dad in a nice sized coop with enough roosts for about 20, we constantly got ones that looked like the ones on the left.  i don’t see why not, the feed is designed to give them the nutrients they typically need (except for calcium, but we also fed them back their eggshells because that was high in calcium).  i think you mean ETHNIC! WITH AN N! Ethically is about race and skin color, in any case we couldn’t just let them range free, they’d’ve been eaten by coyotes and snakes and the like.

That’s understandable. we didn’t have them crammed up the way commercial chicken farmers do for the eggs that had places to go, stretch their legs, but we couldn’t let them do free range anyways.  Ian Michael Citi… Sorry to tell you but you have it backwards about the whole “ethic” and “ethnic” thing. “Ethnic” refers to race, culture, nationality, etc. “Ethic” refers to moral philosophies. Just thought I’d point that out although it has nothing to do with chickens. Better quality of life can’t be determined by the amount of space.

The food you’re given, protection from elements, that’s what makes your quality of life good.  I just took in ten white leghorn hens that were raised and lived in a barn with hundreds of other chickens. Their beaks were clipped and not clipped very successfully. They were dirty and missing feathers. They did end up blending in with the other chickens I have. My chickens are free range with food if they need it. I can certainly say they are healthy and happy.
