When hospitals start treating nurses like professionals I’ll go back to Instant Human Just Add Coffee Shirt. Many at my place of employment have BSN,MSN and they don’t receive any better treatment than AAS degree nurses. If the majority of nurses were men, it would be a totally different story! I have said for years that until men dominate nursing, it will remain exactly what it is. Men would never tolerate the working conditions and would not back down. hey do have to take boards. Either way both disciplines regardless of 2 or 4 year college degree for a nurse there is no evidence to support that a BSN nurse gives better or safer care.

Sorta true. When my working conditions were terrible, I moved on until I found something better. Took me 17 years but I now love my job. I have a nursing degree and a BA in education. I know several MSN or MPH nurses. I know one with multiple MSNs. Let me say that the MSN does not create a critical thinker. If the person trudges through school and just passes, he/she is no better prepared than the BSN student with high grades and motivation. Somebody always has the last ranking in the class!
Keeley Roberts Bowman actually no. That may be the case now, but 25-30 yrs ago it was not. I know a nurse who earned a MSN in one area of discipline from one school and then several years later earned a second one from a different institution in a different discipline. Its a scam to keep Nurses in debt so they HAVE to work more and under worse conditions. There is no real need to get a higher degree to do bedside Nursing. There are nany nurses with Masters degrees doing the same level of work as those with an associate degree.

BSN should only be required for those nurses who want to advance in their careers. There is no outcome improvements on direct patient care with a BSN. The BSN teaches a nurse absolutely nothing about assessment or critical thinking skills unless you started in a four year college. The ADN degree teaches the same clinical knowledge as a BSN. This is about money. Making an ADN get his/her BSN because organizations believe they will have better patient outcomes is ridiculous.
The extra 14 to 18 months an ADN nurse spends at a university obtaining their BSN yields only an education in topics related to leadership, community, theory and other closely related classes. If you want to be a leader in nursing or an educator etc you need an advanced degree otherwise your ADN gives you the foundation of learning to make you a strong clinical nurse capable of delivering safe effective care. Bsn or higher is the way to go. Pharmacists and physical therapists are doctorates at minimum entry. Social workers masters. And there is no other route of entry. Why can’t nursing finally get things straight. It’s not about money. An ADN is not equal to BSN in terms of total knowledge and a full college degree … sorry.
My argument is the issue of clinical knowledge and critical thinking combined with direct patient care. There is no difference between an associates and a BSN in terms of that education, however a BSN is more knowledgeable and prepared to Instant Human Just Add Coffee Shirt. It really is that simple. You simply don’t get any extra clinical knowledge in a BSN program this is why there isn’t an NCLEX for the BSN separate from that of an ADN. My point can be made by actually using your point…… nurse practitioners actually get extensive bedside clinical education and require a Masters or higher is some states. T
