Jim and I will be talking about the Just Cure It Shirt, evolution and Americanization of pizza…from our point of view, of course! Join us locally at 3:00 this afternoon. The picture is a pizza my mother made (Gilda DiCaprio) with ricotta, fresh tomato dotted with spinach. like to make a book recommendation for anyone who grew up in an Italian-American family. (A safe bet in this group!)“Feast of the Seven Fishes: The Collected Comic Strip and Italian Holiday Cookbook” by Robert Tinnell, Shannon Colaianni Tinnell, Alex Saviuk and Ed Piskor is a fun, funny, sad and all-around good read. It’s not going to be a huge classic or required reading in school, but it is worth your time. The first half of the book (following an introduction by the author) is the story told in comic panels. It was apparently an on-line comic at one time, and the panels are collected here for the first time. I enjoyed it, and I hope you will too.

Great article on the origins of pizza, saw a show on TV about Lombardi in NY and its history, very interesting. One Just Cure It Shirt we as italians should remember, we should not let our zeal for authenticity overshadow the true essence of Italian cusine. what I mean is that so much of Italian cooking is not only regional, but truly “use what you got around you.” type food. Granted, the creative pizzas in the USA today might get a turned up nose from many purists, but I submit there there is a bit of snobbery here. Had some of these offbeat ingrediant been available to the average Neapolitan peasant in the 1800s, I dare say they would have used them. As long as the “essance” of the dish is maintained, I think that the variation only enrich the cusine, not dilute it. And, in a way, thses creative ingredients, odd as they may be, actually pay homage to the “Pizza Margherita” of many years ago. As long as we can hold the traditions of out rich heritage in one hand, we should activly create with the other.
