Hell there were times i didn’t see my dad but maybe an hour a week for years at a time. However i always knew that he would be there if he could have, he made it clear in that hour that he loved me.  I was born in the 60’s. My father could cook, sew, he made us pj’s and dresses when we were toddlers also did laundry, dishes etc. He helped my sisters and i with homework, and when we were really little he used to read us the comics. I never heard my parents say this is womans work or men work it was everyone’s work.

You don’t have to make it a liberal or conservative thing. My dad was a grouchy guy with a briefcase. Yes, he supported the family. As he got older, we were able to connect.he worked hard and i appreciate it. It’s how things were. Why can’t we just be happy things are better now for kids, with dads that have opportunities to be more involved. Fuck your politics. Times have changed, yes.

However the ideal does not make someone a dad. It’s the actions, and mentality of the dad that makes them a true parent. There are plenty of dads in the past that took a great deal of time with their kids regardless of gender. It’s how the media tries to portray what they feel the standard is/what should be.

I’m from the early sixties and this was so true for my home. My dad rarely even spent five minutes with us on a daily basis and that was usually to humiliate or punish us. You remember that old saying “wait till your father gets home?” well, that was something i always dreaded. Still have nothing to do with the old bastard after all these years. You must be talking averages, and my dad must be way above average.

Dad spent more than five minutes with all eight of us before he left for work, then spent time with us when he got home from work. He took us shopping, gave baths, put us to bed, and read to us, fished with us, was involved in boy scouts and then the co-ed sea explorer ship that i belonged to as a Kermit The Frog I Heard You Like Ugly Sweater But That’s None Of My Business Sweat Shirt.
