So true, experienced that by being an aide in helping one nurse, because she had Maternity Baby Ninja Skeleton Halloween Shirt and high school!! Which is very hard on a school nurse!! They are very caring.  Because way back in the day, a small group of nurses sank themselves into massive financial debt buying PhD’s. They professed themselves rulers of the nurses’ profession and demanded that all nurses in the land must abandon the intuitive art & compassion that are the soul of the profession, and also sink themselves into debt, abandon their families & forego their own health & fitness in order to have brilliant degrees that rely on catch-phrases like “evidence-based,” “studies have shown,” and “I learned in school.”

I’ve watched the beautiful heart of the nurses profession get smashed & shredded by those who pushed their agendas on all. And now we don’t think, don’t feel, don’t care as we used to – because science & textbooks have turned our patients into cookie cutter algorithms & standardized care plans. A few bad apples CAN spoil the whole bushel. ADN and Diploma RN’s take the same state boards as a 4 year RN. I think that says alot about the diploma and ADN programs!! I am going for my BSN, just to have it, but I can’t say that I am excited about it.

Even if you have evidence based information, the physicians practice any way they want. There are a few exceptional doctors that take the nurses advice, but not too many from my experience working.  With approximately 80K nurses leaving the field annually I’m guessing this experienced 3rd shift ADN’s job is safe for at least a little while. a PhD is earned. It not to torture others to follow suit. In these days many hospitals require a minimum of a BSN….some positions require a MSN to perform the job.  It’s been heartbreaking to watch it happen.

Raymond McCormick In today’s world, if you can pay for a degree, you’ll get it. The PhD is a shell of what it once stood for, and the Masters is in the same boat. Dime a dozen, pay as you go, display a dozen alphabets after your name to impress all who look. Ego BS. In my opinion, the rest of what you wrote is part of the propaganda campaign to have nurses keep studying the same thing over & over again, spending precious time & money supporting universities’ big budget needs but not benefitting our patients. We gave up patient care to the nurse aides in the ’80’s and so deteriorated the spirit & soul of the profession.

Veronica Reuter Still, your nursing care does not necessarily depend on the physician’s pathway – and you have recourse if the physician is way off base (easier if the patient is cognizant).  I really find it interesting that many of us became transport nurses, head nurses, supervisors, etc.etc.etc. We learned on the job and loved our work, and were respected by our peers and most docs. You CAN be an excellent RN without more degrees. Experience, compassion and Nursing as a calling are not found in college courses. I am not against further education. It’s just not the solution to the nursing crisis.

Carol Ann Rybak Perfect. I happen to support diverse education instead of repeating the same subject over & over. It really affords multiple perspectives & new data bases to draw from. (Yep, 3 different degrees, etc.  CJ Santos , you are right. I learned total patient care in my Maternity Baby Ninja Skeleton Halloween Shirt, program– it was the ‘new’ nursing, as opposed to the med nurse, dressing nurse, of team nursing. If you look at all the degrees you can get on line- that is crazy. I learned from using all the senses, yes, smell was important. We nurses should have pushed back against these “computer degrees”.
