I am an Associate Degree Nurse and proud of it. Our hospital is pushing us all to be BSN or higher. They forget it is us in the trenches that are teaching the BSN nurses how to be good nurses and be at the bedside. I agree with higher education but it doesn’t make them any better nurses most of the time they forget where they came from as a nurses aide and what it’s like to take care of a patient with true compassion and love of your job. I work at the bedside I hold my patients hand, I give them their baths,I take them to the bathroom,

I listen to them. Just because they have more initials behind their name does not make them any better nurses we all passed the same state boards. And whose caring for the patients. The bedside needs people. When in school I noticed people receiving BSN no bedside except school. Then returning immediately for MSN. really scared me they would be making the “rules”. Carol Ann Rybak back in the day the solution to the nursing crisis was the AD program. Jan Winfree Harper The demise of the diploma nurse was the beginning of the end of our humble profession.

I have found value in my education beyond the BSN. I’d like to better understand where those who feel as though they got no value from their education were let down. Was it the Health Care System, Nursing Profession, or Higher Education System.  Mr Hass, you may have a very valuable education, my point is so do I. I graduated from a diploma program which incorporated as much bedside education as classroom. When I left school was fully equipped to take care of an entire floor of patients, provide actual hands on care. These days nurses are doing much more documentation than actual care. Education these days is geared more towards computers and writing papers, much less hands on care.

Joseph Hess actually you’ve somehow misinterpreted the discussion on this thread. Please go back & read it through.  It’s sad that diploma nurses must degrade a nurse with ‘higher’ education. I learned so much from diploma nurses, LPNs, and ADN RNs. I respected each for their knowledge and experience. I teach now and have three degrees. Trust me, none were easy. I worked hard for all of them. I teach my students to be compassionate nurses who provide holistic care and that includes wiping butts. I also teach them to advocate for their patients and that may include standing up to the provider.

So why are you calling out Kelly for not speaking from facts. Here’s one for you. For every 10% increase in the percentage of Ninja Skeleton Baby Maternity Pregnancy Shirt in a hospital there is a corresponding 5% decrease in 30 day surgical mortality. Better educated nurses in the aggregate provide better care. All the rest of these comments are just anecdotal evidence and sour grapes.
