Cheryl Plecan Dude, how’d you get all the way out to left field? My fight is with the ANA. Perhaps seek clarification before passing judgment on me or anyone else? And never ASSume you’ve got the right message. Nothing Scares Me I’m A School Nurse Shirt. CJ Santos…. we have an interesting dynamic in our city (Lubbock, TX)… there is a diploma program at Covenant School of Nursing, an ADN at South Plains College, and BS, MSN, PhD at Texas Tech Univ and Lubbock Christian Univ.

The absolute best graduates and BEST RN comes from the diploma program, and they never want for a job around here .their compassion and bedside knowledge is unmatched, and whatever area of nursing they work in will train them, and any nurse on the latest equipment / procedures. Just because you have a degree does not you a better nurse! I’ve been an ADN and still working, for 40 years. I took the same state boards, the same orientation, worked the same shifts, on the same floors as every other RN. I’ve been certified in Case Management since 2003, and I don’t think I’m less of a nurse than anyone else. Having more initials would not change my ethics or improve my skills.
With unemployment at record lows, physicians and nurses are retiring early or leaving the profession in record numbers. Every physician I work with tells their children do not go into healthcare. We are facing a national shortage of general practice physicians and nurses, all nurses. Requiring a BSN for an RN will only exasperate the situation. David Thomas truly the shortage has been going on for decades, but ANA pushed its agenda anyway. When I graduated in jan. 1977, there were no jobs, it took me until November to find a nursing position, the hospitals were bringing nurses from overseas to work, it blocked most everyone in my class from finding a job.

O was thankful that I was working as an EMT at that time, just kept on in EMS until I found a job in nursing. Wendy Diaz McCarthy I don’t know where you were working, because I came through at the same time and it was all about the shortage. I retired after 41 years as a diploma RN. I enjoyed bedside nursing (not so much the last 10 years) but we were of course constantly learning , mandatory Education , etc. So no matter what piece of paper you come to the profession with in your eager little hand, your own dedication and growth promotes you at the bedside. Sure, if you have different goals, supervision, teaching, you need to take a different path.
I graduated in 2001 with only 9 other. I remember they wanted to graduate us early to help with the 9/11 crisis. Every one of us passed the same boards that the BSNs take. And we were ready for that situation. It’s not all about education it’s about caring. So did I and I have a BS in Chemistry, an MS in Ops Research and an MBA to go with my ADN. Was a squadron commander in the USAF and a captain in the airlines. No BSN for me! Me also, never wanted to go and get just to say I did, for at our hospital $5 more a week…what a slap that is. So glad I am retired, nursing is a dying profession.
I too retired as a proud diploma nurse. The days where we all wore white and our nursing caps. When you walked into a patient’s room and they knew you were the nurse. Now everyone wears scrubs and you are just as easily confused with housekeeping. Patients are now called “Nothing Scares Me I’m A School Nurse Shirt” and your evaluated by your patient satisfaction scores and not your clinical knowledge or ability. Patients and family members don’t treat you with respect and let’s not even talk about how administration views you. I loved nursing, but don’t miss what it’s become.
