I would have to disagree with you on that point, Amanda. It is not at all about finding a word in another language that means the same. It is about the rythm, the sound, the flow of the verse. And you cant translate this into another language. You dont want to convey the meaning if you translate poetry but rather the way that something is said.

Translating Shakespeare’s plus-sized version of English into nearly any other language is like cramming 10 lbs. of gumdrops into a 5 lb. bag. Yes, when you’re done you’ll still have a bag of delicious sweeties, but something will be missing in the end. French scholars seem to understand the plays as well as anyone, so sure.

That’s just a fact. As for WS, it’s not snobbery to say that no other single person has had the impact on the English language that Shakespeare did. Shakespeare’s vocabulary was significantly larger than his contemporaries’, and larger than ours today, and he literally created about 1,000 words that did not exist before, many of which are still in use today.

I think Kathleen was on point with her comment.  the casques in shakespeare is translated by les casques in french but the helmets in mordern english . So it all depends I would say, if it is not Shakespeare in french then it is not in modern english as well. I can’t possibly understand or experience Goethe the same way a native German speaker would.
