The thing is, obviously the translation loses its “magic” and the true essence of the English language in Shakespeare, but the hard work to adapt to another language and still making perfect sense it’s a real art. The challenge for anyone translating the bard into a different language is to capture the Official Georgia Bulldogs Dilly Dilly Shirt and various meanings the original English words, many Shakespeare created himself, conveyed. Not impossible but unless in the hands of a person skilled in the nuances of both the original language & the one it’s being translated into, difficult.

All this said, the emotions in Shakespeare’s plays such as fear, love and happiness are universal and if they can be done faithfully in any language then we are all the better for it. I don’t really think so – not exactly anyway. Many of Shakespeare’s stories were not his invention. The turns of phrase and nuances of language are what makes Shakespeare’s work iconic and lasting.
I think that it’s perfectly fine to put on these plays in any language, but the credit for any beautiful intricacies of language that are preserved in the translation should go to the translator, not to a man who didn’t pen a single one of them. Literature is meant to be disseminated! If that calls for translation, so be it. When it’s all said and done and translated well, the story remains the same.

Even when we translate novels into English we know that something is lost. With Shakespeare being iambic meter and poetically inclined I think it only works in English. Not to say it doesn’t benefit and get enjoyed from being translated for ease and pleasure. I studied Voltaire in both English and French as well as Beaudelaire, Jean Racine, Dumas, Ionesco, Balzac and others.
Another poetic element Shakespeare used was meter. Unless you understand some of the nuances of poetry you might miss this. Meter is just the da-DA, da-DA, da-DA pattern of syllable accent. The witches in Macbeth spoke in headless octa-syllables (an odd string of 7 syllables instead if an even 8).
The odd cadence made them sound creepy. Words in translation sometimes do not share the same syllable count. So this poetic tool used by the Bard to tickle our ears would be lost in translation. The nuances of the Official Georgia Bulldogs Dilly Dilly Shirt and it’s poetry is not translatable. Compare the number of enteries in the complete Oxford English Dictionary with the comparable in other languages. We have so many ways to express ourselves. The gist is certainly translatable, but not the richness of the whole.
