How many people completely understand what they see and hear in every movie or play they see or every book or poem they read. I liken it to watching an opera in another language – if the performance is right, you’ll get what’s going on. The great thing in Shakespeare, for me, is the layers he builds in.

Some of his audiences, the groundlings, for instance, wouldn’t have appreciated the more high-flying verse, perhaps, but they could get on board with other parts. It’s got something for everyone. I’m one of those “smart” people that still struggles with Shakespeare for the fun of enhancing their understanding of the original!

If I’m familiar with the play or have studied it I’m good for context, some individual acts, soliloquies, etc, but I saw Midsummer Night’s Dream on stage a while ago and found it very difficult. I think your comment is overlooking a range of factors that make Shakespeare difficult to understand.

I was an English major at Smith College and graduated with a 3.8 GPA. I translated the Canterbury Tales from Middle to modern English. I received a C in my Shakespeare class. As a teacher, I sometimes ask students to translate a key speech into either plain English or our local Scots dialect as an exercise.

It would be dire to watch a performance of any of the plays in modern parlance and to lose the richness of Shakespeare’s language and nuances of meaning.  I never understood why people had difficulty with Shakespeare.
