Handlers who don’t do these things don’t get very good results with their dogs, especially rescued animals. Colleen Posley I agree. I was mostly referring to their mental health after they pull out from a catastrophe. I have close friends who do this work and dogs can suffer from depression after a mission. After 9/11 to prevent the rescue dogs at ground zero from depression from not finding anyone alive the FDNY would hide themselves for the dogs to “find”. There’s very strict guidelines for trained cadaver dogs.

It’s known they can develop ptsd, so they have debriefing breaks, with their favourite game or activity, to help reset their mind. After the event, they have ‘holidays’, with more games such as the one Linda Ritchie Unger described, to ensure they stay keen and skilled. If she knew how shittly dogs were treated in Mexico by humans, she’d probably do a happy dance every time she found a dead one. How ironic that thousands of dogs are beaten, tortured, neglected, starved and maimed every single day in Mexico, yet we have dogs trained to rescue humans.

Absurd. And that goes for the rest of the world, too. How dare we use them to help us when shelters are full of them, we kill millions of them annually and we still allow puppy mills by the thousands DISGUSTING!!. Dogs are capable of smelling and hearing better than humans. This is why Frida has been a great help in this tragedy!! Dogs are awesome! And then I look at so many families around the world and say, hey, why does this daughter not feel so loved to see her parents? Why does this man not seem so happy to see his wife at the end of the day?
