They need to move out of the dark ages and consider the future careers and the ever increasing role technology is and will play in most industries. Second language is a great idea……something useful would be great though. Our kids in primary learn Indonesian from Pre-Primary through year Property Of Opie Shirt but unfortunately moving to high school in our area means a total switch to Italian which I personally don’t think will be of any benefit to them.

I’d much rather them continue with Indonesian or move to Spanish. Learning Indonesian was compulsory until yr9 when I was in school. Did I use it? No. Absolutely no interest in learning it & had no use for it. I believe learning a language like mandarin is more beneficial due to trade. The language chosen should be beneficial to the child’s work future. Wish I had the opportunity to do that. I think we should just focus on teaching actual ENGLISH in primary than learning about historical nonsense.

There’s no point in teaching kids feudal Japanese history or aboriginal culture, when they can’t even write a proper essay or communicate an idea through a written piece. Good idea! They will walk away with more than just a few extra words under their belts – the main benefit will be from the cross cultural understanding gained and for students who only speak one language, the feel of what it’s like to speak another language. This experience alone has more value than a few extra English lessons. I think it is a great idea. This will upskill kids at a very young age and assist them in increasing their chances of employment in the future.

I remember none, because we never had to use it in the real world… I’m bilingual already, but that’s my native tongue, & I remember it, & learned it, because always around it, outside of school… Ood idea. My kids speak English, Polish and German. Nothing wrong with that. I am Polish and they were born in Germany. Now they can have conversations with their grandparents who are too old to learn English. I read. No instead of …. Or instead of…. No teach them English first… They are bad at English.

Do you know how good it is for a childs brain to learn another language? Go on and read about all the good things. It really open doors for you in the world. Ellenbrook College have applied for coding to be considered a language to give students and schools flexibility to meet student needs. Australia needs to think forward and better meet the needs of a variety of children. I think we should teach the Noongah language. I understand people’s anxiety about our children not reaching an ever increasing benchmark for maths and literacy, the easily tested, measured and statistified naplan subjects but by teaching only maths and Property Of Opie Shirt it will make kids hate going to school.
