Teenagers are probably the most confusing and frustrating stage for parents. You have to find this delicate balance of letting them be free to make mistakes and strict enough to keep them from doing stupid things. Hang in there dad! He’ll see that you do what you do because you love him.
I read this and smiled. You’re parenting a teenage boy. I remember saying to my neighbour one day, she is Chinese background, “I’m sorry Grace if you heard me yelling at James”…she said “oh how old is James?” I said “13”… she said “ahhh it get worse before it get better” LOL. She was right. Across all cultures it’s hard work. But you too will laugh one day.

I’ve raised 6 kids through the teen years. I have a little experience. If your teen doesn’t feel safe talking to you, you better find someone that he will talk to especially if he doesn’t go out and hang out with supportive friends. He sounds depressed and lost. No amount of love or opportunities offered will fix that. Pushing someone that is already overwhelmed with life is dangerous. They can’t always meet your expectations and will feel like a failure to you. School is not the most important factor to consider–his mental health is. School is not a mentally safe place these days.
Bad things happen to our children that we have no idea about. I found out horrible things even with an extremely open and supportive relationship with my kids. I would have supported them and helped them but they didn’t tell me. They knew that but still can’t explain why they didn’t feel like they could tell me even years later. Their problems are real and significant. I wish I’d asked many more very direct questions when I saw behaviors change and not just assume it was a teenage thing. One thing I will suggest is a notebook to write back and forth.
Start small. Write something nice about Proud Mama Bear Shirt each day. What you aprreciate–even if it is difficult with a teen. Make sure he knows that you would believe him support him no matter what…or offer a counsellor that he can talk to for help that is confidential and doesn’t report back to you. I wish I could be more personal on here but please don’t believe love and time will be enough!!! It isn’t! Forget about school and books!
