Not a huge deal. May as well fill them with knowledge whilst their brains are sponges. I hated learning another language when i was in school, and don’t agree with it now, especially since so many kids these days struggle with basic english skills! Why learn another language it’s not like we are bordered by any neighboring Snoopy Dont See Dont Speak Dont Hear Shirt and what about those that already speak another language at home will you make them learn another language too.

What about those who are forced to learn the language of a nation that they hate or were opressed by…. Why not sign language…i use signing every day and have done for 3 years now as my son was non verbal…it primary school i learn indonesian, italian, spanish and high school spanish and japanese never used any of then sinc school. Some kids do not have the ability and they will end up feeling like they have failed. I think learning a second language should be a choice and parents should be able to help their child with that choice. Disagree.

Maybe concentrate on their written english and math skills. Our kids are failing basic skills without making it mandatory for unnecessary second language skills. Australia always 20 years behind this happens all over the world why is it that we have to have opinion polls on everything that changes 90%of your opinions dont matter anyway every individual sees things differently. It is time for every child to learn english , so they can read, write and comprehend our language before moving onto other languages. After all this is australia and we should manage our own language first . Whats wrong with that?

From year 7-9 it was compulsary for us to learn indonesian. I dont have a problem with it. It teaches the kids more about the world we live in.. Although they could teach them sign language which would be slightly better. Keep it consistent. My daughter started indonesian in yr 8 in 2014 then language was dropped from the school, learning japanese in primary school has enabled communication on our family trips to japan.

I don’t understand why anyone would cut themselves off from learning. My kids have learnt japanese, indonesia and italian.. They can only count in these lingos now… But they can speak over 30 noongar noongar words, and know a handful or more of wadjari words.. Keeping indigenous language alive is important too. Why? English is a universal language. Kids can make up their minds about a second language when they grow up.

In d meantime, let them concentrate on being good in d primary language which is english. That’s great, though it would be nice if it was consistent, not changed every time a teacher leaves the school, indonesian, mandarin, italian, in the space of 5 years! This is okay as long as the language they learn is the same at every school. We moved around a lot when our kids were little and at each new school there was a different language to learn and because they were so far behind they had no interest in learning them at Snoopy Dont See Dont Speak Dont Hear Shirt.
