As long as we keep throwing tantrums over “cultural appropriation” race relations are never going to get better. We need to stop creating problems when we already have plenty on our plate as it is. There have been some costumes in the past that were in bad taste, no one’s disputing that. But i’d like to see someone tell a little white girl (or boy) that they can’t be Star Wars Darth Maul Let’s Get Sith Faced Sweater because they’re skin isn’t dark enough.

You tell me, what’s that perpetuating? Just as i would lose it if someone told a black child she or he couldn’t be elsa because their skin was too dark.  Yeah, try to explain cultural appropriation to a child who idolizes a character/person and doesn’t see race.

We teach our kids to always look past race, if they’re being degrading towards the character or costume i could see why it would be wrong but when they idolize them i don’t see what’s wrong with it. My mother gave me the outfit after i got married. It was so gorgeous, but i wasn’t happy with the length of the pants, so i brought them to an expensive italian taylor, and he converted the pants into a skirt.

One year, for a halloween party, i decided to wear it. I had a beautiful japanese fan, with mother of pearl on the sides. I got a japanese wig, and put white makeup on, with black eyeliner to make my very round eyes look asian. I know many asian people, chinese, japanese, korean, vietnamese. They were friends, colleagues, and students.

I told everyone that i was a chinese-japanese lady. I thought i looked great, and everyone loved the costume. I was not in any way making fun of anyone; on the contrary, i felt i was honoring asian beauty! I would have been highly insulted if anyone had even suggested otherwise! Perhaps others would be flattered you want to be like them. Seriously, if i admire a certain culture, what is wrong with tastefully adorning their costume?

Why do we have to be offended by everything nowadays? Because people really do dress up and make fun of others cultures. They ruin the good innocent fun for everyone else and cause Star Wars Darth Maul Let’s Get Sith Faced Sweater else to be offended.
