I would have to disagree with you on that point, Amanda. It is not at all about finding a word in another language that means the same. It is about the rythm, the sound, the flow of the verse. And you cant translate this into another language. You dont want to convey the meaning if you translate poetry but rather the way that something is said.

Translating Shakespeare’s plus-sized version of English into nearly any other language is like cramming 10 lbs. of gumdrops into a 5 lb. bag. Yes, when you’re done you’ll still have a bag of delicious sweeties, but something will be missing in the end. French scholars seem to understand the plays as well as anyone, so sure.

So it all depends I would say, if it is not Shakespeare in french then it is not in modern english as well. I can’t possibly understand or experience Goethe the same way a native German speaker would.

And this simply doesn’t work. It doesn’t work with Goethe, it doesn’t work with Shakespeare. If you only translate the meaning, you lose the poetry and if you translate the poetry, you are an artist yourself, not a translator. If you translate Shakespeare to German, you might as well scratch your toenails over the blackboard.
