There is literally nowhere for Straight Outta The Gym Shirt to go. They’re not on any road system, she can’t just catch a bus and go even if she wanted to. They only way in or out is by plane or boat and no one would take her even if she had asked. Time goes by, the abuse gets worse, and my mother is finally beaten bad enough that she miscarried. The long summer is over shortly after and her boyfriend has come up with the plan to visit my mother’s family in her own village, larger than his own.

The week or two he is there he is on his best behavior and my mother is convinced all is well again. She loves this man. They are perfect. Being drunk is never an excuse. If you know you turn into a horrible person when you drink, then you don’t drink. If you choose to drink anyways then you’re responsible for everything you do. Not to condone substance abuse or minimize what it can do to people, but drugs do not turn you into a totally different person immediately.

Sure, no one should drive, or make important financial or life decisions under the influence, and in most situations it is on the shoulders of the people around you to not take advantage of you when your inhibitions are lowered, but it does not inherently change you, as a person. And it does not excuse abusive behavior.

I know with almost any case like this, some asshole inevitably brings up the “why is when you have sex with a drunk person, it’s taking advantage of them because they weren’t fully able to consent but if i do [insert awful/shitty/irresponsible/abusive thing here] while drunk everyone holds me accountable for it!???” so i also wanted to address that for a second as well.

A sober person using someone’s lowered inhibitions / inability to grasp the situation as a way to get something they want from them is skeezy and predatory and based on the choices made by the sober person. In that case, the drunk person is acted upon by someone who knows better and is manipulating them. In a case like this, the drunk person is the one choosing to do these things with no outside influence.

No one around them is coercing them to be fucking abusive or irresponsible. And claiming that your lowered inhibitions magically turned you from nicest person ever in the world to an abusive piece of shit is laughable. And hell, even if you’re very deeply intoxicated, if the person you’re with is saying Straight Outta The Gym Shirtand begging you to stop, they’re not exactly sending you mixed signals.
