As a small po;ltry farmer I know my hens lay a dark orange yolk when they are outsode but a lighter egg when I have to keep them inside for a few days (foxes and or winter weather).

The thickness and hardness of the shell is not about the health or freerange but rather abouut the age and amount of calsium the hen is eating. Even a free range folk will often need to be offered calsium. Lastly, many fols don’t know this but the only requirement for a “freerange bird is thath the bird has 18” square of floor space and a door where they “could”go outside rather than the standard 12″square of floor space. So a free range bird could still never see the light of day. Go put a coop in the back yard, you will love it. Nnana that’s not how it works. Sorry.

It’s based on diet (the grass). Grass contains xanthophylls which is the main cause of yellow in the yolk. That alone does not prove health of a chicken.  100% right. All my birds (various types of hens and ducks) are the same. The more greens the darker the yolk. My free range birds often have fragile thin shells too. There is still no doubting that a proper free range egg tastes so much better than a caged one both literally and in relation to your conscience. My chicken eggs (free range, well cared) don’t taste any different than others, the only difference is the colour of the yolk (because of the greener diet).

The black bantums are good for that, and the egg they produce is small and a pale green shell, still tasty! It is not easy without a coop, unless you have property to fence out predators, and better have a suitable place to roost or they’ll use your porch and trust me, you do not want that.  We have already contacted all the state resources but they stopped accepting applications.
