Their purpose was to make the movie studio more money after the movie leaves the theater by giving people an opportunity to buy their favorite movie after the fact (or buy it if they missed it in the theater because realistically we can’t watch every movie that comes out in theater). What netflix is proposing is something completely different. And not just cheesy “Made for TV” or Direct to DVD movies. they will do the work to make oscar nominated blockbusters that will never touch a theater screen.

That’s different, that’s true disruption. And once Netflix cracks the code… others will follow. Died in the process? They thrived, and only declined because new home formats were released, like Blu-ray and online streaming. And unless Hollywood studios would have allowed VHS and DVDs to be released at the same time as at the theatre, there’s no way they could have been a real threat to the movie theatre. If they continue to increase their prices with such frequency, I will be disrupting my payments. Imo, they could raise it $5 per month and it would still be a steal.

 

They usually only raise it a dollar or two so, meh. Their original content is not all that great. I already have Amazon and Hulu. I can just as easily let Netflix go.Carolyn Stevens Perhaps, but people will leave Netflix in large numbers if they think they can keep raising prices and expect movie goers to abandon theaters for a small screen. I have Netflix, HBO Now, and Hulu and am still saving money over cable. There’s plenty to watch on Netflix and $10/monthly is hardly expensive.

We were going to take our 3 yr old grandson to see Cars 3 this past weekend but by the time I reached the payment option online for our local theatre the total was $42! That was for 2 adults and a 3 yr old for a MATINEE and NO SNACKS!!! No wonder Netflix and others are doing so well!!!Virginia would be about the same, except for during the work week in the morning, I think it’s more like $25.When I go to the movies, it’s to get out of the house, maybe go out for dinner, and see the movie on a really big screen with incredible surround sound.

 

Netflix should be focused on having better content rather than trying to compete with movie theatre chains. Half their movie selections are fillers that I doubt anyone watches. I would MUCH rather watch movies on demand without having to drive to a specific location to see them, schedule an entire night around them, watch them on a too-big, too-loud screen, smell carcinogenic fake butter the entire time…and pay through the nose for the privilege of doing so. It always surprises me that anyone feels differently. This industry is RIPE FOR disruption.

 

I think they’ve already disrupted the movie theater business! I used to go to the movies nonstop, but now I’d much rather stay home or go to a friend’s and watch Netflix/Hulu/Amazon. When I go to the theater the floors are sticky and I think about is how much more comfortable I would be at home, and about all the dirty butts that sat in my seat before me. I work 12+hrs in a ER and attend class as well as clinical rotations… Just a busy person, who would rather spend time at home or with friends in an environment where I’m comfortable.
