Instead of learning a forgein language why not teach them sign language? The Valentines Day Shirt would be a better place if we raised a generation of adults who can communicate with people who have no other way of communicating. Who came up with this brain wave. Good grief most children are struggling with English let alone another language. This is just another example of our failed education system. Why is this such a big deal to some people.

No one is suggesting we spend less time teaching English and basic literacy; this is, of course, our priority and will remain so in the future. We’re talking about teaching a different subject altogether; another language! We also – FYI- now teach computer coding and online safety in schools; we must keep up with the times and provide opportunities for the next generation of globally connected students, commensurate with the 21st century.

My only concern is the potential lack of consistency in languages taught between schools; e.g. Your child starts Indonesian in one primary school and then must switch to Italian in high school, what’s the point? He or she will never be fluent in either language. Other than that, I think it’s a great idea that will facilitate better communication skills all round. Am trying to find the benefit of my 2 children having learnt Japanese since year 3 *they’re now in high school.

Fifty minutes a week that could’ve been better spent on English grammar and comprehension, The Arts, or… How about life skills and social justice? All of you kicking up a stink, this is a good thing, it is far better for them to learn more as it can further their career choices and communication skills, and they learn 2 or more languages far better at a young age. I’m from europe and we learn a second language (english) from year 3.

And have to choose another language, france or spanish, in year 6. And we have to learn latin. It opens so many doors. There are children finding it hard to master English put resources into helping them first. Have you forgotten that Australia is a multicultural society and there are plenty of kids who already have a second language. I didn’t realise it wasn’t already compulsory. I learnt Greek in pre-primary to year 2 and Italian from year 2 to year 10.

I remember there was a deaf student in my year 2 class and all of the students were taught basic sign language alongside languages. I don’t remember much Italian or Greek, but I still remember some basic sign language- seems just as beneficial, if not more, than languages. If there are Year 3 students who can comprehend, speak, and read fluently in English then by all means suggest to their parents that an after school class for a foreign language will be made available, otherwise let’s concentrate on developing the Valentines Day Shirt first.
